Classes meet for five hours a day, five days a week, in day or evening sessions. CLIP is an option for students who have been accepted to CUNY and need to improve their academic English skills before taking college courses. Students who have been accepted to any CUNY college and informed that they are not English proficient can begin CLIP in any semester and spend up to one year in the program. Students can attend any of the 9 CLIP program sites, which are in all 5 boroughs (See CLIP locations .) CLIP is a low-cost program . Most students pay a fee of $180 for a 14 to 16-week semester (25 hours a week). Students do not use their financial aid while in CLIP. Instead, they save their financial aid for subsequent college coursework. See CLIP enrollment information, calendar and fees for the upcoming session.) CLIP is a content-based English language program . Students learn English through studying topics they will study in courses for their General Education Requirements, including American history, sociology, literature, and science. (See sample course descriptions .) In this way, students build academic knowledge and skills as they develop their English language skills. CLIP is an effective program . CLIP students enter college with experience in writing compositions, reading and analyzing texts, conducting research, and making presentations. Thousands of CLIP alumni have graduated from a CUNY college with an average GPA of 3.1 or higher. CLIP students also develop bonds and support networks that help them succeed as they continue in their studies at a CUNY college. (See CUNY Matters article .)
